The Games

The Russian Federation proposed the concept of hosting the CIS Games. On September 28, 2018, the Council of CIS State Leaders met in Dushanbe and approved the plan

In addition to putting the CIS collaboration agreement in the realm of physical culture and sport into effect, the Games were organised to fortify the long-standing amicable relations between peoples.

The goals of the Games are to preserve CIS national sports as a historical legacy; their popularisation and development at the international level; promote a healthy lifestyle; develop positive physical and moral qualities in young people; cultivate patriotism, the will to achieve goals, respect for history and folk traditions; and improve sports prowess and experience of the athletes competing in international competitions.

The games are open to athletes aged 23 and younger, with Olympic and World champions eligible to participate as long as they meet the age requirement.

History and Future

Azerbaijan 2025

Azerbaijan’s city of Ganja has been elected as the Sports Capital of the Commonwealth of the Independent States (CIS) for 2025. The relevant decision was made at the meeting of the Council for Physical Culture and Sports of the CIS Member States held in Minsk, Belarus. Therefore, Azerbaijan will host the 3rd CIS Games in 2025. Games will take place in 7 cities of Azerbaijan – Ganja, Gabala, Goygol, Mingachevir, Khankendi, Yevlakh and Shaki on 12 venues and medals will be contested in 23 sports.
These include Rowing, Canoe, Wrestling, Women’s Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Table Tennis, Shooting, Swimming, Basketball 3×3, Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Sambo, Badminton, Trampoline Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Chovgan, Shotgun, Football U-16, Fencing, Archery, Volleyball and Boxing.

Minsk 2023

The 2nd CIS Games featured medal events in 20 sports.

These included athletics, volleyball, modern pentathlon, bullseye shooting, rhythmic gymnastics, beach football, 3×3 basketball, mini-football, wrestling (Greco-Roman, freestyle, women), beach volleyball, handball, swimming, Muay Thai, boxing, judo, sambo, field hockey, weightlifting, archery, and karate.

Kazan 2021

The event featured 15 sports, with junior athletes competing in most categories, except for Muay Thai, futsal, and kurash.

Athletes showcased their skills across a diverse range of sports, including badminton, 3×3 basketball, dancesport, futsal, rhythmic gymnastics, shooting, table tennis, boxing, belt wrestling, judo, kurash, karate, Muay Thai, sambo, and wrestling.
