Gabala

The Games

Gabala, situated in the northwestern region of Azerbaijan, is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich historical legacy. For millennia, this land has served as a cradle for diverse civilizations, rendering it a unique destination for both domestic and international travelers.

For a span of 900 years, from the 4th century BCE to the 5th century CE, the ancient city of Gabala held the distinguished position of the capital of Caucasian Albania. The magnificent fortress walls that have endured to this day stand as a testament to its 2500-year history. Located along the Great Silk Road, Gabala was already known in the 1st century CE as Cabalaca, as documented by the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder. It is also mentioned by the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century as Khabala and by the Arab historian Al-Baladhuri in the 9th century as Khazar.

Gabala diligently preserves its historical heritage, serving as a compelling example of the harmonious confluence of history, culture, and nature.

The city of Gabala exerts a strong allure through its remarkable natural environment. Situated at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level and encircled by the majestic mountains of Bazarduzu, Tufandag, and Bazarjurd, it is further embraced by a verdant ring of dense forests. The pristine air and abundant mineral springs render it an ideal destination for both wellness retreats and ecotourism. The Tufandag Winter-Summer Tourism Complex, Lake Nohur, the “Seven Beauties” Waterfall, and the Shongar mineral spring attract travelers throughout the year, each offering unique experiences and vistas.

Contemporary life in Gabala is enriched by a vibrant array of cultural and sporting events. Since 2009, the annual Gabala International Music Festival has been held in the open air of Gabala, drawing performers and enthusiasts from around the world.

The city boasts excellent sporting infrastructure, including a modern city stadium that meets all international standards, a new and well-equipped shooting complex, the “Tufan” ski resort, and an amusement park. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as quad biking, mountain trekking, hunting, fishing, and paragliding.

Modern development is intrinsically linked to transportation networks. In 2011, Gabala International Airport was opened, capable of accommodating all types of aircraft. Furthermore, railway connections provide swift and comfortable travel to and from Baku.

By successfully integrating modern and comfortable infrastructure with its ancient heritage, Gabala has evolved into one of Azerbaijan’s premier tourist destinations. It appeals to enthusiasts of history, nature, and adventure alike, offering a wealth of unforgettable experiences.

The climate in the city is temperate and warm, of a subtropical variety, with areas of alpine tundra present in the higher elevations. Summers are typically warm, dry, and clear, while winters are cold, snowy, and partly cloudy. Throughout the year, the temperature generally ranges from −4∘C to 29∘C, and it rarely falls below −9∘C or rises above 33∘C.

Within the district’s boundaries, over 90 historical, ethnographic, and tangible cultural monuments are officially registered and protected. These include the Gabala fortress complex, the Wind Towers, and the Gabala Fortress itself. To ensure the preservation of this significant historical and architectural heritage, the Gabala Historical and Cultural Reserve, encompassing an area of 480 hectares, has been established.

Within this reserve, visitors can explore a stone burial mound dating back to the 1st millennium BCE, the Albanian-Udi Church of Saint Elisha (2nd century) in the village of Nij, ancient necropolises, the “Gizlar” fortress (4th-14th centuries) south of the village of Enijca, the Surkhay fortress (10th-12th centuries), the complex of mausoleums (14th-15th centuries) in the village of Khazra, the Komurad mausoleum (7th century) northwest of the village of Dizakhly, the remnants of Budkhan within the city of Gabala, the Juma Mosque constructed in the 18th century, as well as numerous other historical landmarks.
